THE LION'S ROAR
APRIL 2023
CO-CURRICULAR
COURSES AT CORNERSTONE
We are blessed to offer schoolday, co-curricular classes including Physical Education, Art, Library, Music, and Band!
Art - Mrs. Beatty, Grades K-5 & 9-12
“Every year in art class, we start by creating work that reflects our own Great Creator so we can begin the year knowing Who gave us the abilities and creativity that we will use throughout the year! We will complete projects that reflect each season (can you believe we’re starting on Spring next week?!?), study and re-create great art through history (like Mondrian and Monet), and talk about perspective, contrast, and texture in what we see and create. I love using all kinds of materials, like tin foil or yarn or dry wall filler! It’s fun to experiment--expanding our understanding of art as beauty and expression, while at the same time growing our motor skills and deepening our hand-eye coordination. We have fun learning about what makes a Van Gogh painting unique alongside mastering the use of scissors! It’s been a jam-packed, colorful mess in the Art Room this year, as usual!”
- Submitted by Mrs. Beatty
Art is a once-per week course for all students in Kindergarten to Grade 5, and it is a Fine Arts Elective available to our high school students.
Library - Mrs. Whitney, Pre-K to Grade 5
Our elementary students love visiting Mrs. Whitney, or as she is known by our youngest friends, "Mrs. Library. " Each elementary class visits the library once a week for a story and a lesson. Mrs. Whitney’s passion is exposing the students to quality literature and hopefully igniting a love for reading! Students learn basic library skills along with literacy related skills (such as parts of a book), genres, and more.
Music - Mrs. Stice, Preschool to Grade 12
Mrs. Stice also teaches a wide range of ages! From the youngest Preschool class to our Middle School Choir, she brings excitement and a love for music! Throughout the day, as you pass her room, you may see students singing, using rhythm instruments, and even dancing along to music! The youngest students focus on enjoying music and learning rhythm. By Grade 2, students are learning to read music as they learn the "precorder." In Grade 3, students advance to the recorder. Throughout the year, students are also preparing for our two major presentations: the Christmas Concert and Spring Concert & Art Show. Music is a required course for students in Preschool to Grade 5, meeting once or twice per week, and is a Fine Arts Elective available to students in Grades 6-12.
Instrumental Band - Mr. Demand, Grades 4-8
When our students enter Grade 4 they join our band program that offers percussion, woodwind, and brass instruments. Students solidify their music reading skills and learn the basic skills for their instrument. Each year, it is a pleasure to watch the students grow and advance between the Christmas and spring concerts. Band is a required course for students in Grades 4-5 and is a Fine Arts Elective available to students in Grades 6-12.
Physical Education - Mrs. Brey, Pre-K to Gr. 12
Talk about a wide range of activities in any given school day! Mrs. Brey offers a curriculum of activities that focuses on fitness, skills, and sports at each developmental level for all the students at CCS. Recently, each grade level began the floor hockey unit. The youngest students are learning with some fun pool noodle sticks that Mrs. Brey created!
Our program and our teachers focus on helping all students gain confidence and enjoy moving their bodies and learning new activities.
