THE LION'S ROAR

APRIL 2023

PARTNERING TOGETHER IN SERVICE

Each year Ms. Roderick leads our McLain students in an exciting event to celebrate March 14th, otherwise written as 3/14, and known as Pi Day! Students in Grades 6-12 are invited to participate in the annual Pi Off. Not only does this give students something to look forward to in the longest month of the school year, it is a good opportunity for students to reflect on the way God designed Creation so mathematically.

It's also a great opportunity for students to shine, sharing their God-given giftings and talents with us all!

This year's Pi Off had an incredible number of submissions and performances ranging from baking pies to the presentation of a research paper! There were skits, original songs, PiKus and the Grade 7 students lead us all in a Pi-inspired workout session!

Taking the trophy for most digits of pi recited from memory was Julie Thiel (grade 11). She correctly recited 144 digits while the eyes of the entire McLain student body and faculty were on her. Way to go, Julie!

The following are the winners for some of the other categories that day. Thank you to everyone for joining the fun and making this one of our best Pi Day celebrations so far!

Song Winner: Wes Schneider, Skit Winner: Becca Shemenski, Madison Chen, Luke Schmid, Sarah Brey, Pie Baking Winner: Zeke Sullivan, Artistic Representation of Pi Winner: Mae Howard, PiKu Winner: Luke Schmid, Miscellaneous Creative Winner: Freshman Class, Ms. Roderick’s Favorite (WildCard): 7th grade Pi Workout

Recently our students in Pre-K to Grade 12 partnered together for a special service project. Our Grade 8 Bible class, led by their teacher Mrs. Brey, organized a snack drive for Street Church, which serves the people of Hartford.

During our recent Theme Day Chapel, Bryan Bywater, pastor of Street Church, shared a little about the church and the mission to serve the homeless population of Hartford. Our students then worked in their partner grade groups to decorate drawstring bags. Students added pictures, words of encouragement, and scripture verses.

The snacks collected by the Grade 8 Bible class were then used to fill over 100 bags! Mrs. Brey was joined by CCS high school English teacher, Mr. Refsnider, and students Owen M. and Sarah B. for a morning of service with Street Church. They passed out the bags and participated in the morning service.

During a recent chapel service, they each shared about the experience. The common theme was the blessing that comes from listening to God and following His lead when we serve Him.

Mrs. Brey repeatedly shared how amazing it was to see so many people walking around Hartford with scripture on their bags!

We love to see our students come together to serve in ways like this. We look forward to continuing to partner together in the future.

GRADE 7 SHARES A MESSAGE OF KINDNESS

We love to see our students lead Chapel! Throughout this year, many of our classes have taken a turn to present a message or lead a chapel service.

This month, Grade 7 worked together to share a special message at our elementary chapel. The Grade 7 students first led the elementary students in our quarterly memory verse recitation.

Next up was a special skit about loving and accepting each other. Several students then shared a Bible verse and brief message of application.

Mrs. Hattin, the Grade 7 Bible teacher, expressed pride and thankfulness for the great effort and attitude displayed by the students!

A HEATED DEBATE . . .

ABOUT ANTHROPODS!

Each year this is a highly debated topic in our Grade 7 Life Science class--literally!

Our Grade 7 students look forward to this annual, fun, and friendly competition. Students worked in teams to learn about one of the four subphyla: arachnids, crustaceans, insects, and millipedes & centipedes. They came to the debate armed and ready to defend their group of arthropods and to prove that their group is the best!

This year's judges included Mrs. Snyder, Mrs. Press, Mrs. Hattin, and Ms. Elliott. The students in Grades 6 & 8 also voted on a winner. Congratulations to the judges' choice, Team Arachnids, and the students' choice, Team Crustaceans.
