a place to call home

A partnership between the Australian Foundation for Disability ( Afford ) and the New South Wales State Government ’ s Family and Community Services – Ageing Disability and Home Care ( ADHC ) will see 12 group homes established for people with disability in the Penrith region .
Seven of the new houses were opened last November by the Minister for Disability Services , The Hon . John Ajaka , with 18 residents moving into the accommodation .
“ These purpose-built , accessible living spaces will make such a difference to the lives of the residents ,” Mr Ajaka said . “ I am delighted by Afford ’ s commitment to providing services that are focused on the holistic needs of people with disability through thoughtfully creating accessible and inclusive homes .”
The $ 16 million project will establish a total of 12 group homes housing up to 40 residents . The project is a culmination of three years of planning , design and consultation with builders and clients to create homes that are tailored for the needs of residents .
Throughout the project , Afford managed the selection of a suitable location close to public transport and shops , the design of the homes to suit easy accessibility in all areas , and ensure suitable supports for residents . To encourage an easy transition into the group homes , Afford has provided residents with skills based training courses to develop their abilities in cooking , cleaning , sharing space , budgeting , travel and safety in the community .
Afford lifestyle assistants will also provide residents with support to enhance their skills in daily activities such as shopping and taking part in social activities , in an effort to build confidence for a long-term goal of independent living .
Steven Herald , CEO at AFFORD , says that the new group homes signify a journey of personal development . “ For some , these group homes will be their first experience of living independently with peers . They will have the chance to enjoy similar interests , socialising and will also understand the responsibilities of living on their own ,” he said .
