Be Wary of Environmental and Location Challenges
Edmondson says location can also play a big part in health challenges . For instance , Alabama and Florida will face different issues and pathogens more specific to their areas than those prevalent in the northwestern states . There could be large or subtle differences in parasite infestations or reproductive challenges . Management processes to deal with specific problems will differ , but she believes respiratory issues needing vaccinations will be quite common . “ The big problems are still the big problems no matter where you are . BVD is BVD . Trichomoniasis is trichomoniasis .” She says the bulk of health strategies can be individualized for each ranch and farm with the assistance of a localized , trusted veterinarian but the big keys remain the same . “ What may work for me on my ranch might not work for you on yours , be it a commercial operation or as a seedstock breeder . Neither are immune from difficulties ,” she said .
“ The biggest thing we can do to protect cattle from disease is give them a good start with vaccinations and deworming programs , then make sure we reduce stresses with early castration , dehorning if necessary and low stress handling and weaning practices . Those are the types of things to set calves up for success in the long run .”
Nutrition and Body Conditioning are Never an Instant Recipe
She warns producers not to forget or discount nutrition for all their animals in every stage of life . “ A lot of people think , ‘ I ’ ve vaccinated my animals-that ’ s the magic bullet .’ But for animals to respond to this vaccination , they need a strong immune system , and the majority of that is related to nutrition . The healthier those animals are , nutrition and body condition wise , the better the immune system will be . This will help the response to the vaccine .”
Edmondson says body condition is not an instant recipe and needs to remain a focus for cows , heifers and bulls . She adds these adults often get overlooked , especially 3-year-old females that just raised their first calf .
“ People need to pay more attention to these animals in the adult herd . They ’ re harder to breed back because after calving , they ’ re lactating , growing and nursing a calf , but still growing themselves . It ’ s really important to make sure they are on a solid plane of nutrition for continued success .”
Regarding bulls , she says conditioning is extremely important for yearlings and adults alike .
“ Young bulls heading for the sale ring or a customer ’ s pasture tend to be a little over-conditioned at times , but I say that with reservation . One of the best things producers can do is get a body condition score ( BCS ) card and follow it . Bulls get worn down and lose some condition during the breeding season . They will need extra nutrition , so having a defined calving season is important . Let them gain weight before moving them into the herd for the next breeding season .”
