Calving in both the spring and fall has been a win-win for the Cravens , who enjoy both the struggles and rewards of calving in both seasons . The same herd bulls are used for both breeding windows , so they place extra emphasis on making solid herd sire selections that will benefit both their spring- and fall-calving herds .
“ We have purchased bulls from several places including Pinegar , Wulf and GV Limousin ,” said Cravens . “ We prefer to use red Limousin bulls that are aged 18-24 months . We enjoy sticking to the red color in our breeding program . To me , Limousin should be red , so that ’ s what we use .”
Looking to the future , the Cravens are hoping to expand their cow herd if they can acquire more grass — an ongoing challenge that many can relate to .
“ We don ’ t raise our replacement heifers , but we are always looking to add more females to our herd ,” he said . “ Overall , I think Limousin is the best breed in the country . It ’ s our hope that we can continue to spread the word and to work with NALF to help cattle buyers and feeders see the value of these red Limousin calves . With excellent docility , hardiness and feed efficiency — we have a great story to tell in the Limousin breed today .”
