Today , Sisemore ’ s sizable seedstock herd is made up of Limousin , Lim-Flex , Red Angus and Black Angus cattle . As the property lines of the ranch started stretching farther and farther and calves kept hitting the ground , Sisemore penned a new slogan for the operation : The Little Ranch with the Big Genetics .
“ I came up with that simply because we were trying to sell and acquire the best genetics we could get a hold of in our breed ,” he said , “ and that ’ s still true today .”
While the ranch nowadays cannot be accurately described as being little in stature , Sisemore hasn ’ t waned in his quest to raise and acquire top genetics in the beef industry . He believes Limousin cattle bring traits to the table that help him reach his goals for genetic success . From build and body structure , to muscle depth and overall performance , Sisemore knows he ’ ll have a quality animal when it ’ s of the Limousin breed .
Adding to their value on P Bar S Ranch , Sisemore said he appreciates the Limousin breed ’ s ability to produce quality Lim-Flex calves . Lim- Flex — a Limousin / Angus hybrid — is a cross Sisemore finds to be in high demand .
“ That hybrid has excellent body structure , excellent hindquarters , and their front end and capacity are always good ,” he said . “ They just outperform other cattle .”
The Little Ranch with the Big Genetics isn ’ t known just for their quality stock , however . They are known throughout the industry for their hospitality and customer service . This is the 16th year the ranch will host its semi-annual production sale . The tradition began when Sisemore needed a way to market his cattle , but the sales have evolved into so much more over the years .
“ We started by having a typical production sale , where we had anywhere from 75 to 100 head go through the ring . It went from that to a huge party ,” he explains . “ We have almost 200 people show up now .”
Those clients vary in both their business and background . Sisemore ’ s big genetics bring in seedstock and commercial breeders from across the country , with cattle sold being shipped out to new homes in Missouri , Arkansas , Tennessee , Texas , Kansas , Colorado and beyond .
Besides the opportunity to acquire some of the ranch ’ s genetics , Sisemore said the sales are a great networking opportunity for his fellow cattle producers . When the sales first started growing in popularity , Sisemore and then ranch manager , Bob Getz , worked to come up with a plan to build a facility capable of hosting both quality cattle and large crowds of potential buyers .
Elgin Elmore ( left ) handles the day-to-day responsibilities of managing the P Bar S Program owned by Paul Sisemore .
When the facility was completed , Sisemore said the sales were able to become the event he had envisioned . Through his production sales at the ranch , he looks forward to showcasing his herd and bringing new faces to the ranch .
Recently , the interior of the barn was remodeled to resemble a town from the “ Old West .” The P Bar S “ Tiny Town ” now hosts many “ non-cattle ” events throughout the year . The impressive sale barn has evolved into a prominent landmark on the ranch property , and while Bob Getz no longer calls P Bar S Ranch home , he certainly left his mark . In addition to having long ago earned the respect and friendship of Sisemore , Getz ’ s former assistant , Elgin Elmore , has taken over the role of manager of the operation .
“ Since the first production sale in 2007 ,” Elmore said , “ P Bar S Ranch has doubled the pasture land and the number of mother cows .”
With this growth , Elmore said he has watched firsthand as the operation has outgrown its “ little ” moniker over the past 15 years he has severed as manager . continued on page 28
