PRESIDENT ’ S MESSAGE

by Dan Hunt

Hello everyone , and thank you for reading the Fall Sale Edition of Limousin 365 . In this edition you will find some interesting articles as well as many programs highlighting their upcoming sales . I encourage you to take time and study each program and what they have to offer . There are great cattle and even better people in the Limousin breed all across the nation . All you have to do is thumb through the magazine and do a little research and no-doubt you ’ ll be able to find your next herd-sire , donor female or show heifer .

As I sit here writing this article and watching the rain , I would be remiss not to mention how thankful I am for the moisture we ’ ve had here in south-central Nebraska the last few months . My thoughts and prayers are with those of you around the country suffering through drought , hurricanes , tornadoes or whatever it may be . I hope things improve sooner rather than later for all of you going through hardships .
We had a productive NALF Board meeting August 16-18 in Denver . The past year has been a successful year for NALF in many ways . We look forward to sharing that in more detail at our annual meeting this upcoming January in Oklahoma City during the Cattlemen ’ s Congress . On behalf of the Board of Directors , I give my thanks to Mark and the entire staff , as they continually work to be fiscally responsible . A fair amount of time was spent discussing Gene Editing . Genetic technology seems to advance more quickly every day , and the process of Gene Editing is here and will keep progressing . Keep an eye on the NALF website in the Member ’ s Rules and Regulations and read through how we will handle this new technology as it relates to registering cattle . Additionally , the Board got the opportunity to visit Magnum Feedyard , where we had good discussion about the value of Limousin-influenced genetics in a feedlot environment .
I would encourage any of you that are not participating in LIMS Whole Herd Reporting to give it some thought and consider joining . Not only does it help your operation by submitting complete , unbiased data records , it helps the entire breed and herdbook gain accuracy in our EPDs . You also have a great opportunity to be a part of the LimVision Cowherd Reporting Project . It ’ s very simple , just submit DNA on 90 % of your cowherd . You will get a 100K genomic panel on each cow as well as parentage , all at half the normal price . You also can get $ 3.00 back per female simply by reporting a Body Condition Score and weight . Further , a huge benefit is once you have 90 % of your cows done , you lock-in the reduced testing rate for all of your replacement heifers moving forward . This is an outstanding opportunity to learn more about your cowherd that should not be
passed up . LIMS members interested in participating need to have samples at the NALF office by December 1 .
We are still looking for large cowherds to partner with us in our upcoming feeding trial . The plan is in motion , and there is a ton of excitement , we just need more cows ! Please , if you or any of your neighbors , customers , or someone you know has a set of cows and interest in working with us , get ahold of Mark Anderson or myself .
Fall is here , my favorite season ! To me , it ’ s always rewarding to study which matings worked the best and at the same time learning which genetics can be improved upon . From a young age , I have had a true passion for breeding Limousin cattle , and I urge you to work hard at making breeding decisions that will continually improve your program , as well as the entire breed .
I hope all of you have a safe and successful harvest and the calves come home healthy and heavy !
