80 • JULY 2021
continued from page 78
For a more in-depth discussion of this update , refer to the September 2020 edition of Limousin365 . I would like to highlight that in implementing the procedures for change # 5 , above , there is a step that evaluates if weights reported for a contemporary group meet biological expectation , if they do not , the weights will be removed from the evaluation .
November 2020
An important regular piece of housekeeping was completed in November in the form of updating the USMARC breed differences for carcass traits . Think of this as a regular tune-up , much like changing the oil in your car , it is important to do so periodically . Due to lack of actual carcass data being submitted , the IGS genetic evaluation uses US-MARC breed effects instead of effects from data in the evaluation . This is common with traits that have limited records , as it is impossible to find enough contemporary groups with breed comparisons to make evaluation of breed effects possible from data submitted by breeders . In situations like this , it is best to use estimates from scientific literature . These literature estimates are typically from studies that had breeding systems specifically designed for the purpose of obtaining breed effects and are much more reliable than what could be obtained from field data .
In general , we see increases in carcass weight , marbling and fat for both Limousin and Lim-Flex , and a slight decrease in REA .
December 2020
In December of 2020 , you may have noticed some movement in carcass EPD due to significant number of carcass observations being added . Animals were added to carcass evaluation for two reasons : 1 ) Beef on dairy records were added 2 ) Animals with carcass data , but no weaning data were added to the carcass weight / ribeye evaluation
February 2021
Earlier this spring , an update was made to the Stayability evaluation . A problem with the STAY evaluation had been incomplete calf-crop reporting . Previously , when a female added a progeny record , her entire contemporary group received an observation for that year , which caused frequent swings in EPD values as reporting continued for other females in the group . In February , censoring began on Stayability CG to temporarily remove contemporary groups that appear to be incompletely reported . This censoring will help more correctly report Stayability EPD and stabilize against wild swings until the entire contemporary group has been reported .
