PRESIDENT ’ S MESSAGE
by Dan Hunt
Hello everyone , and thank you for thumbing through L365 ’ s Breeder Directory Edition ! Growing up in this breed , the Breeder Directory Edition has always been one of my favorites . It gives the reader a chance to learn about all the wonderful operations we have within our Limousin family . I hope that you ’ ve all had a successful spring calving season . It is always exciting to see the results of well-planned mating decisions !
I am halfway through my fifth year serving the membership by being on the NALF Board of Directors , and I am continually reminded at how wonderful the people are in our breed . For example , last November when my parents , Charles and Nancy , celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary , the stack of cards and phone calls received from Limousin friends was truly mind blowing . They were extremely touched , thank you all .
This past April in Lincoln , Nebraska , we held a successful board meeting . The COVID-19 regulations have lessened quite a bit here in Nebraska , so it was great to be able to sit in a meeting room and productively discuss our agenda face-to-face . The Board also had the opportunity to tour the U . S . Meat Animal Research Center in Hastings , Nebraska . They gave us a brief , but very interesting history of the facility , as well as showing us many statistics on how our breed ranks and the genetic progress we ’ ve made the last number of years . It ’ s nice to know the diligent work we all do as animal breeders is being recorded and visualized within the industry . A few things I ’ d like to bring to your attention : There is still time to run your females through the LimVision cowherd project . At a discounted rate of $ 24 , LIMS members have the opportunity to genomically-enhance their entire cow herd . This not only results in increased accuracy of EPDs , but also runs parentage on each animal , allowing us to maintain the integrity of the NALF herdbook . To date , NALF has run 2,950 females on the cowherd reporting project . In addition to testing cows at the discounted rate , members that test 90 % or more of their cowherd are eligible to test replacement heifers at the $ 24 rate for the foreseeable future . This project will wrap up at the end of this year . If you are interested in taking advantage of the program , contact Alison or Tammy in the NALF office .
Donations are steadily flowing in to the North American Limousin Research Foundation ( NALRF ). Those of us who have fed Limousin and Lim-Flex-influenced feeder cattle know their profit potential , and now is our chance to prove it ! By utilizing Foundation donations , a comprehensive feeding study is planned to capture feed performance and harvest data on three different contemporary groups . The Board
strongly believes in Limousin genetics and we are eager to document this study through South Dakota State University , then get the results out to the masses of feedyards and cow / calf producers . We expect positive results , which will create more pull-through demand for your genetics .
The tentative schedule has been set for the Cattleman ’ s Congress , the first week of January 2022 in Oklahoma City . We expect record turnout for our shows , annual meeting , National Sale and Genetics on Ice event . We are also scheduled to conduct a Level II MOE show at the 2022 National Western Stock Show in Denver , as well as a pen bull show .
The National Junior Show & Congress is quickly approaching and I hope to see many of you in Grand Island , Nebraska ! A special thanks to Ann Vorthmann , Mallory Blunier and the NALJA Board for all the hours and effort put into planning this annual event .
In closing , I pray you all have a safe and productive summer and that the good Lord blesses us with rain , healthy calves and green pastures !
