end of next year . The limiting factor for the custom beef business is the massive demand for home-grown beef . Scheduling an appointment is near impossible .
“ Nothing can beat our hamburger ,” Phelps exclaimed . “ It sells our beef faster than anything in the world , especially when individuals go to purchase ground beef from the store if they ’ ve run out of their custom beef from us , they immediately call to order another beef because nothing compares .”
Phelps is always looking for cattle with a lot of muscle and moderate frame . “ We pick out the very best to send to be processed . If it isn ’ t something that I want to consume , then I don ’ t send it to be processed ,” Phelps explained .
Limousin beef is leaner and more tender than any other beef there is . Phelps always explains to his customers that there are more pounds of red meat per animal with Limousin genetics .
O ’ Connor Farms Limousin exhibited for many years at the Ohio State Fair Commercial Cattle Show , where they accumulated countless champion banners . Their cattle compete extremely well on the rail and grade exceptionally well . Phelps explained that his cattle routinely dress at least 66 %.
Phelps and O ’ Connor Farms Limousin have a very prestigious history of accomplishments . To name only a few — they have been awarded the Ohio Cattlemen ’ s Association Environmental Stewardship Award in 1998 , the Ohio Cattlemen ’ s Seedstock Producer of the Year in 2007 and Phelps was named Recipient of the Ohio Cattlemen ’ s Association Beef Industry Excellence Award in 2010 . The accomplishment that brings Phelps ’ the most pride however , was being inducted into The Ohio State University Department of Animal Sciences Hall of Fame in 2013 . “ It was so special to be added to the esteemed list of inductees in that hallway in the Animal Sciences building ,” Phelps remarked .
Advice that Phelps has for younger cattlemen is something to always keep at the forefront of any operation . “ You have to do your homework and decide where you want to be in the industry . The best thing to do is find someone to mentor you . I ’ ve been really blessed , my dad has been a true mentor to me along with my uncle Dale ,” Phelps said .
When asked what gets Phelps out of bed each morning , he quickly responded , “ I love the cow herd and taking care of the cattle . I really enjoy evaluating each individual here at the farm . It ’ s taught me to evaluate all of my livestock and I really enjoy being around them . It ’ s neat to breed each cow and see what the outcome is when calving season begins .”.
