From the Field
Strong Family Ties
By Andy Rest, NALF regional manager
As with any family, our Limousin family has
started off the New Year with lots of activity.
I felt that Limousin activities in Denver at the
National Western Stock Show were very positive.
The weather, with the exception of the first day,
was beautiful, with lots of sun and temperatures
ranging from the high 40’s to low 60 degrees.
The quality of the cattle both on the “Hill”
and in the “Yards” was extremely deep. It was
gratifying to hear the judges talk about the
quality they found in class after each show.
Many Limousin enthusiasts took advantage
of the beautiful weather to spend time in the
yards looking for a new potential herd sire.
The Magness Land & Cattle “Mile-High Elite” Female
Sale and the National Sale drew large crowds and
we saw active bidding throughout each event. The
Genetics On Ice Benefit Auction, which supports
the National Junior Show and the All-American
Limousin, gathered over $73,000. Thanks to the
many consignors and buyers that made this event
such a grand success! Congratulations to Mark
and Tammy Anderson, Katie Campbell, the NALJA
board, and the entire NALF staff for making this
year’s National Western a smooth-running event.
On a sad note, right before the National Western,
our Limousin family lost well-known breeder
Gene Raymond of Garnett, Kan. I have known
Gene for over 30 years and have shared many
good times with him at Limousin events across
the country. I will always treasure the time I spent
with him and son-in-law, Arne Hanson, this past
summer at their ranch looking at cattle and
discussing many different topics. He was a mentor
and friend to many and will be greatly missed.

At the end of January, another great Limousin
family was honored at the Black Hills Stock Show
in Rapid City, S.D. Rod and Wendy Peterson,
Pukwana, S.D., were named the show’s 2019
Stockman of the Year. I have known and worked
with the Peterson family since my start in the
Limousin business. All three sons, Chisum,
Cade and Quinn and their families are actively
involved in the Limousin business today. It was a
real honor for me to be present to see this hard-
working family receive this prestigious award.
The Cattle Business Weekly in their January 23,
2019 issue also did a front-page article on another
member of our Limousin family, auctioneer C.K.
“Sonny” Booth. This year marks the 36th straight
year Sonny has sold the Limousin sale at the
Black Hills Show. Congratulations my friend!
As I write this, I’m just heading into the heart of
the bull selling season. So far, the early sales have
seen strong demand and good prices. If I can
help you at any of the upcoming sales feel free
to give me a call or drop me a text or email. I
