Management
Keep Reaching for the Next Branch
By Bruce Derksen
As a producer, seeing the title
of your farm or enterprise
in a magazine or specifically
the Limousin Herd Reference
publication can be an exciting
thing. I know it always makes
me proud to see my name in
print but then reality sets in
and I understand that a name
really doesn’t say anything
about me, or in this case, you
as a producer. It is just our
designation. Think of a small
child attempting to climb a
massive tree in his family’s
front yard for the first time. As
he struggles to perch himself
on that lowest branch, he gets
his balance and declares for all
to hear, “I’ve made it!” And he’s
correct, until he looks skyward
and sees a large mass of higher
branches for him to conquer.
In reality, he may need to grow
some before he can reach that
next limb, but eventually he
will be successful. Hopefully,
for you as a Limousin producer,

your designation is only the
beginning of your climb.
As the many excellent writers
pointed out in the Herd
Management Issue last month,
targeted goals larger than
seeing your name in print are
extremely important. Don’t be
one to proclaim, “Look at me,
I’m a recognized producer!” and
then let your farm fade away
into nothingness. Whether
you are an established owner

when it counts—weaning time. He mashed the scales down himself and his calves should do the same.
