Parentage Markers
The biggest holdup on DNA
testing is the type of parentage
markers. Animals run on the HD
profile, LD profile, or standard
parent verification are run
on SNP markers, which is the
most updated set of markers.
Before requesting parentage
on an animal, double check
that both parents of the animal
have SNP markers on file. They
will be under the DNA tab in
Digital Beef, and should show
SNP with a Y, and parenthesis
with the number of markers.
If an animal shows SNP with
an N instead of Y, this animal
does not have the markers we
need to parent verify calves.
In some cases, the lab is able
to pull the SNP markers off of
an existing sample. In other
cases, a new sample will need
to be provided. Most of the
time, the best option would be
to send a new sample on the
parent as well if you are unsure.
Many breeders are unaware of
this, and parentage results can
be held up an additional four
weeks waiting on a new sample
from the AI sire or donor dam.
You may recall back in 2012
that NALF requested all
animals be moved from the
old microsatellite (STR) to the
new SNP markers. Though it
was recommended, there are
many donor dams and AI sires
in the herd book with only
STR markers. STR parentage
