Tissue samples will be collected on each calf to determine the sire group in order to correctly capture and identify carcass data to incorporate into the NALF herdbook . Each sire group will look to keep growth traits high , while holding birth weights moderate . Primarily , the objective of the study will be to evaluate the influence of each sire is progeny Angus cows . The calves will be fed to three different days on feed endpoints of 245 , 280 and 315 days . We will measure growth performance , efficiency of dietary net energy utilization and carcass characteristics .
When the study concludes in 2024 , we hope to prove that Limousin and Lim-Flex influenced cattle have an advantage in efficiently and profitably converting feed to carcass weight , even when taken to heavier outweights . With Limousin and Lim-Flex genetics , we can produce cattle that meet and exceed quality grade and yield grade targets when compared to straightbred counterparts , while producing heavier carcasses .
Through this project , we would like to show that cattle feeding profitability is driven by more than just one trait . Quality grade , yield grade and superior feed efficiency must all be factored into the profitabily equation of finished cattle . Harvested cattle need to achieve an acceptable quality grade level while reducing as many yield grade 4s and 5s as possible . Additionally , with the government becoming increasingly involved in the sustainability of agriculture , it is as important as ever that the beef industry stay as efficient as possible .
Projects of this nature are labor intensive , financially demanding , and can be downright daunting to take on . It takes us out of our comfort zone and into the great unknown . As we navigate through this , it is important to remember we are all on the same team . Your Board of Directors and NALF staff have put countless hours into this project , and we want to see it succeed as much as you do . Keep in mind that while opinions may differ , we are all in it for the same reason : we believe in the Limousin advantage and are Limousin proud .
