Limousin 365 April 2022 | Page 16

continued from page 12
The superior cattle have extremely high value to all sectors of the industry . We all look for cows that lower maintenance cost in the cow / calf sector , but progeny out of those cattle that move into the production chain at the grass , stocker and feedyard levels have real economic advantages as superior conversion rates have a major advantage in terms of reduced production cost .
Since 65-70 % of the cost of beef production is in feed cost , we need to continue to promote the advantages the Limousin breed has in this trait . Eventually we will have an additional EPD to reflect dry matter intake , this can be combined with average daily gain data to find cattle that possess superior feed conversion capability . If you haven ’ t been able to capture intake data , it makes it even more critical to turn in your new progeny ’ s existing weight trait data to capture growth differences on your cattle .
Ultrasound data is critical as well . If you are not able to capture harvest or actual carcass data , ultrasound data to record backfat , marbling and ribeye differences are still very effective and allow you to sort superior cattle for carcass traits and increased accuracy . Folks that have had successful bull sales the past few years are doing this as their customer base is increasingly demanding all the performance data and genomics they can get on bull purchases .
As they say in the country , nothing is more expensive than buying a cheap bull that does not have superior performance in all aspects and is backed up by data . Tie in the genomics to increase accuracy on purchase value and the commercial buyer has more data than ever before to evaluate potential purchases . Make sure you are doing your best to supply that to your existing customers ; it will help attract new customers as well .
NALF is also moving along on its research project as well this Spring . With the help of two commercial cow calf ranches in Montana , we will be breeding three different contemporary groups of sires to commercial cows to document differences in feed performance to three different harvest dates along with capturing harvest data differences through third party research at South Dakota State University in the Fall of 2023 .
Documenting these differences should reveal differences that have real economic impact to the commercial cattle industry . We will keep you updated as we move forward with this project the NALF board has devoted much time and effort to . We appreciate your efforts and support as members of the association as we all work together to move the breed forward in a positive direction !
