From hosting their own annual production sale, to consigning cattle to premier sale, cattle bred in their program have met much buyer demand. and raised in Duplin County, Dexter said they are consistently searching for ways to give back. “Our efforts here are because the county has been so good to us,” he said. “We’ve never had to leave our home, and we are just trying to provide good opportunities in the county for our friends, family and grandchildren.” Dexter and Pamela have Nicholas and a daughter, Brittainy, who both help with Edwards Land and Cattle Co. Between their two children, Dexter said he has been blessed with three grandchildren who keep him busy when he isn’t at work. Dexter is currently serving his second term as county commissioner, and Pamela is an elected member of the Duplin County School Board in an effort to help improve education. Dexter may be dedicating his time to many organizations, but said he wouldn’t have it any other way. “I have been a person that has always been busy,” Dexter said. “I’ve always done more than one thing or held down more than one job.” Dexter said his greatest joy has been having his son come back home to help manage Edwards Land and Cattle Co. Nicholas’ involvement has allowed him to find balance between the work he loves and time for his family, Dexter added. Nicholas has never doubted that being involved with the family business was what he wanted to do in life, but said it was his father’s dedication that gave him the ability to come home to the operation. When Dexter first started Edwards Land and Cattle Co. after he graduated from college, he only had an acre-and-a-half of land in his name. “My dad started everything we have from the ground up. He built this farm from nothing,” Nicholas said. “I love working with him, and I wouldn’t trade it for anything else in the world.” Nicholas has always looked up to Dexter and said his father is the sole reason he has been able to pursue his passion and find a career continued on page 44 • JANUARY 2020
