Metal Sculpture by Nicholas Baker

I've always enjoyed tinkering in the workshop and had a professional life in the construction industry.

Somewhat out of the blue, I decided to attach a sidecar to my bicycle. The only viable material seemed to be metal, so I taught myself to weld and created a functional if horrendously uncomfortable bicycle "combination".

I had caught the bug! After this I erred towards metalwork wherever possible.

Purple Protea by Nicholas Baker

The Sidecar

I spent seven years living in Durban. During this time I was lucky enough to go on many adventures around South Africa and saw fields of wild protea. The fascinating variety of forms and colours really struck me and, once I had an opportunity, I had a go at replicating these amazing flowers.

My inspiration often comes from nature - flowers, birds etc. That said, there are thoughts that pop into my head - from who knows where - and I'll launch off on a project, just to see how it turns out.
