Limited Edition Issue 8 | Page 2

The Committee has set its mind to streamlining all procedures and pulling the application, selection, management and sales procedures firmly into the 21st century. The membership will be fully trained up by the time we set up our first exhibition in 2020.

In this issue we look back on the final exhibitions of the year – RHS Wisley and Savill Garden – a studio visit to Adam Aaronson’s Glass Studio and the lively lecture by Johannes von Stumm.

It has been a 25th Anniversary year filled with successful exhibitions, joyful social events and interesting workshops and lectures. Long may it continue! I am sure we will with the relentless efforts of my fellow Committee members and Associates to the Committee and, last but not least, all our volunteers.

Merry Christmas to all and here is to another creative year in 2020 - Cheers!

welcome

Dear Readers,

While writing the first words to this Welcome message I realised that another calendar year has flown by. Alas, not by magic…

We end 2019 having fulfilled our plans for celebrating our 25th anniversary year. With a lot on our plates – a prestigious exhibition calendar and other events (as featured in previous issues of the Limited Edition) – we again relied on the free hours of countless members to make this year happen at the usual professional level.

Sometimes I think there truly is magic in the SSS air. We seem to conjure up the volunteers every year who step up to the tasks and challenges time and time again. The spirit in which our members give their time and energy demonstrates the essence of the Surrey Sculpture Society.

I am so proud to say that we have matured into a professional organisation, ticking off 25 years without failing to deliver what the Society has stood for from the first days back in 1994:

• promote interaction between sculptors through an internal supportive and social network and supporting emerging artists

• organise exhibitions of members’ works

• encourage public appreciation of sculpture through workshops and lectures

Apart from embodying its original aims, the Society has carefully built up its professional reputation. We are approached by third parties for advice as well as exhibition opportunities; and are sent unsolicited, but warmly received, testimonials.

At the time of writing I am very happy to introduce a full Committee to you. We have recruited our long-standing member, Seamus Cuddihy as our Exhibition Coordinator. I am sure we will continue our professional operating levels over the coming years, if not improve them, with his lead.

We are finalising our exhibition calendar year for 2020 as we speak. The calendar will be short the coming year due to a long-overdue internal re-organisation of procedures.
