The Day Arrives
Set up day is here! I awake early and set off in the Land Rover with Tom. A sunny day for a change but we’re a little apprehensive. We have 79 sculptures to place and lots of artists to meet and greet. We arrive at Hatchlands car park and some artists are already there. The next five hours are a blur but it was great fun. I was left totally in charge and everything went according to plan. Even the fact that some children had moved a few of the numbers the day before didn’t have any effect and all went well. The staff at Hatchlands were fantastic and helped all morning. Henriette set up the marquee, Sarah met all the artists and directed them to the nearest off loading locations, whilst Tom and I helped the artists locate their sites and check all was safe.
Private View
Everybody was pleased with their sculpture locations and our invited guests were very complimentary. I wandered off with a couple of guests to tour the trail and missed the speeches and was told how naughty I had been by Henriette. Other than that, all went well!
Nothing to worry about and it looked like a proper sculpture exhibition. It had been a long journey and a learning curve but I had gained so much. The whole experience was great fun, just as David had said. I now know so many more SSS members including my colleagues Sarah, Henriette, Nick and of course Sue and James from Hatchlands. I got all my expenses paid, a year’s free subscription to the SSS and no stewarding duties at Hatchlands. I now truly feel part of the SSS and will miss the involvement until the next time!
