Forty eight artists took part with over one hundred and sixty works of art on display both in the garden and marquee. The artist/stewards did a fabulous job of manning the Sales Desk and fulfilling all the duties to make the visitors welcome and the sales process smooth. Sales may not have been as high as last year but were not far off.
Set up days and take down days seemed to work well and I hope every artist felt the experience to be a good one. These times offer the chance to chat to fellow artists and feel that, as the "rare breed" we are, when we get together, there is a real presence and opportunity to develop our own artistic endeavours and our burgeoning friendships.
The work of Surrey Hills Enterprises (SHE) is impressive with their remit "to build a brand for the Surrey Hills by working with local businesses under a membership scheme to promote the local economy and support enterprise". SHE devised the idea of a festival for one of the weekends, which certainly fulfilled their ethos.
Birtley House has hosted a sculpture exhibition for 11 years, with the last three managed by SSS. It is a spectacular venue and we will hold many good memories of beautiful art placed with spectacular effect.
In this, our 25th anniversary year, it’s good to know that the founding principles of Surrey Sculpture Society are still very firmly in place: to provide exhibition opportunities for our members, to encourage interaction and exchange of ideas and to promote a greater appreciation of sculpture within society.
I am proud of my role in fulfilling our SSS objectives by managing this exhibition and gaining so much experience that I can put to future use. Now I just need to make some more sculpture!
