welcome

Dear Reader

I am proud to introduce you to Issue 4 of our thrice yearly e-Magazine, Limited Edition. Brimming with art, art education, personal art journeys and demonstrations. It is hopefully another source for further artistic inspiration.

This issue is a genuine portrait of who we are, what we do and what we stand for: offering exhibition opportunities to our wide variety of member artists, organising educational studio visits, lectures and demonstrations, and engendering a greater awareness and appreciation of sculpture within the wider community.

The 2018 Exhibition Calendar is now well underway: you will find in this edition a visual tour of The Sculpture Garden at Birtley House Estate that was held in May - a joint effort with Surrey Hills Enterprises. It was an extensive exhibition of around 180 pieces by 50 different artists, with work indoors as well as in the gardens.

During this exhibition there was a variety of free demonstrations by various SSS artists. We hope you enjoy the video of one such demonstration.

At the time of writing, we were coming to the end of our second major exhibition, the sculpture trail at RHS Hyde Hall in Essex, one of the most beautiful RHS Gardens to display our wide variety of sculptures.

Although not located in Surrey, we are very happy to go beyond the borders of what our Society’s name suggests; not only as far as location is concerned; many of our members, in fact half of our members, are not living in Surrey. We welcome all artists into our circle, whether they are exhibiting or non-exhibiting.

In this issue we also feature some of the people who make the Society tick behind the scenes. Last May, during our AGM, we welcomed Claire Nelson onto the Committee. Claire introduces herself in this issue. We are also grateful for the support we receive from Associates to the Committee. A profile of Alison Catchlove is included.

On the educational/cultural side of the Society we enjoyed an excellent lecture by Simon Buchanan; a highly inspirational lecture & tour of the Rodin exhibition at the British Museum; and a visit to the magnificent studio and gardens of Phillip Jackson in the first half of this year alone. And there are more highlights to come during the rest of the year. Thanks go to Janet Morton and Barbara Marshfield for their time and effort to make these things happen. Please enjoy the written reports and visuals.

Our recently revamped website is the place to go to find out everything that is going on in the Society. It will show you the calendar for the year with details of the exhibition, lecture programmes and latest news. Members can also find out about social events and private studio visits. You can discover how to become a member or become a "Friend of the Society" with the click of a button.

Last but not least we are delighted that Filomena Forte and Bill Urmenyi, two very longstanding and respected members of the Society, have metaphorically opened their studio doors for us to discover more about their work and lives.

The SSS is developing its Social Media presence on some specific platforms: we are featuring on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram and soon we will publish all our educational video material on a dedicated YouTube channel. We hope we can count on everyone who uses Social Media to promote us, follow us, like us, share us and feed us with news! In return we will keep doing what we are doing with great pleasure: art, art education and art promotion, in particular, in the field of sculpture.

Limited Edition is freely available and you can find the previous and this current issue by visiting newsstand.joomag.com and searching for "Limited Edition". If there are members of your family or friends who are interested in the arts you can give them a free subscription to our magazine on that site.

Wishing you all an enjoyable summer and happy reading!

Henriette
