Of particular interest was the commission he received to commemorate all the airmen (over 55,500 of them) who died in the Second World War.

The Bomber Command Memorial (Green Park, London) was a large piece of seven figures, standing nine feet tall, which took 18 months to create from beginning to end. Each figure represented a crew member of the Lancaster Bomber: Pilot, Flight Engineer, Navigator, Wireless Operator, Mid-upper Gunner, Rear Gunner and Bomb Aimer.
Philip Jackson gave meticulous attention to the details of each of the crew member’s uniform and kit. As a group, you get the sense that the crew has just arrived from a mission and are waiting for the rest of the fleet to arrive. What makes this memorial so moving are the emotions being expressed by each airman – hope or despair, anticipation or fear, confidence or turmoil – through their poses and facial expressions.
