Buoyed by this we are delighted to be presenting three main exhibitions this year: Ramster Gardens, Leonardslee Lakes and Gardens and The Savill Garden. All three are different but equally stunning backdrops for us to stage full trails of new and exciting pieces.

All details are on the website and we anticipate a gentle return to more normal service throughout the year.

On a personal note, I would like to say that it’s a privilege to have this chance to contribute to the Society. I come to the role with a sense of responsibility but I’m determined that we also have a little fun along the way.

We are fortunate to have a committee of talented and energetic members and we look forward to continuing to save the world, one sculpture at a time!

I hope you stay well and we look forward to welcoming you to one of our 2021 Exhibitions.

All the very best to you all,

Nicholas Baker

welcome

Hello and warm greetings to everyone. Allow me to introduce myself – I’m Nick Baker, the new Chair of the Surrey Sculpture Society.

Before I continue, I would like to mention my predecessor, Henriette van der Does. It is universally recognized that Henriette has vastly improved the Society during nearly five years of leadership.

This is not to forget the significant efforts of the rest of the Committee and the volunteers who come forth from the general membership. Some have titles and specific roles but we are a society of equals and it’s only through collective effort that we thrive and grow.

We all know what a changed and frustrating world we are living in at the moment. Most of our shows and social events were cancelled last year and we all felt their loss.

That said, we managed to put our heads together and produced our inaugural online exhibition – Unlocking Art 2020 – a fantastic effort and the results were better than we could have anticipated.

Continuing in a similar vein, Henriette and Caroline Wheaton have recently launched our second virtual exhibition – Sculpture Showcase – which is live as we speak and can be accessed through the Society’s website (click here).

Go take a look if you haven’t already and spread the word, it’s awesome!

We also managed, during a break in restrictions, to stage The Savill Garden exhibition in an almost normal way. With extra effort from both Savill and our crack team of volunteers (principally Andy Bendix and Denise Jaques) we achieved record sales and produced an event to be proud of – with or without the background of COVID.

Proof that where there’s a will there’s a way.
