Photo by Emily Chen hydrangeas, bigleaf magnolia, and a patchwork of grasses, sedges, and wildflowers are only the most recognizable among the garden’ s treasure trove of native plant species— all complemented by a wide variety of herbs and other edible treats.
Whether it’ s a library storytime event, a midday picnic on the grass, or simply a quick stop to snap a selfie against one of its super-scenic backdrops, the garden already sees plenty of use from those who are aware that it’ s there. But Clem says there’ s still plenty of room for the garden to grow its profile in the community:“ It’ s such a great and enriching asset for Athens,” she muses.“ We’ d love for more people to know about it, and to come out and experience it for themselves.”
You don’ t have to be a library cardholder to make yourself right at home in the garden. As the weather warms and Alabama’ s native wildflowers begin to show their colors this spring, visit the Library Garden at the Athens-Limestone County Public Library— always admission free— at 603 South Jefferson Street in Athens.
