An outdoor oasis that’ s close to home

Springtime comes to colorful life at the Athens-Limestone County Public Library Garden

By Benjamin Bullard

Some people go to their local library to get away from it all— whether it’ s the hustle and bustle of screens, traffic, work commitments, or just the all-around hectic and overscheduled time crunch that comes with negotiating modern life.

But at the Athens-Limestone County Public Library, there’ s a place you can go that elevates the idea of“ retreat” to a prettier, quieter, and more rejuvenating level than even the climate-controlled indoor confines of the library itself. It’ s the adjoining Library Garden, an in-town oasis of rustically manicured beauty— and it’ s located only short stroll beyond the library’ s main entrance along Jefferson Street just south of downtown Athens.
Built on reclaimed urban land and filled with an abundance of native plants, the Library Garden isn’ t just a haphazard collection of pretty things meant to be admired from a don’ t-touch distance. It’ s instead a natural outdoor playground aimed at engaging every visitor: If you happen to spot a strawberry or spring of mint while you’ re there, you’ re more than welcome to sample it.
“ Oh, we want people to pick those berries!” says Emily Clem— one of numerous Limestone County Master Gardeners who helps maintain the garden year‘ round— with a nod toward a row of nearby blueberry bushes lining a garden fence.“ It’ s great to see the kids out here discovering all this stuff. They really love to play on the‘ bubble rocks.’”
