Some of my strongest memories as a child are smells. My grandparents tragically died when I was five years old. My main memories of them are of their special cooking smells, as they were vegetarian and baked their own bread. At seven, I remember winning an eraser in a game at a birthday party and showing it to my Mum saying,‘ this smells like the caravan we stayed in on holidays two years ago.’ She sniffed it and exclaimed,‘ Oh, yeah – you’ re right!’ My first career was as a Medical Scientist. I was drawn to Microbiology as a favourite subject. My sense of smell became even more highly developed as I used the unique odours of the bacteria to be able to identify them. Yes – I sniff out infections! After working in pathology at the hospital for several years, I was invited to teach laboratory science at the local College. Eventually I became a full-time lecturer for the pathology subjects. I loved teaching, and received several awards for my innovative practice.
What Does an Aromatherapist Do? A qualified aromatherapist has studied the biochemistry of essential oils and learnt how to effectively and safely use essential oils for treatment. When I work with a client, I find out as much as I can about the condition or issue they are seeking help for. I take into consideration how old they are, if they are on any medications that the essential oils could interact with, what their general health is like, and more. I can then recommend how essential oils could support the client in their health journey. When thinking of‘ aromatherapy’, many people’ s first thought is of massage. Massage certainly is a relaxing and therapeutic way to experience essential oils, and it does form a part of my practice. However, essential oils can be used to alleviate physical symptoms and promote physical health in other ways, as well as supporting the emotions and mental health. Much of the new research demonstrates that essential oils can be as effective as or even more so than other modern conventional medicines for issues such as infections or anxiety, and with less side effects. Essential oils, being plant-based, have an energetic healing capacity, and so can be used for spiritual work and for self-healing practices. Aromatherapy certainly takes a holistic approach to health!
Aromatherapy Services Through Titch Haven, I offer a range of aromatherapy services to suit different clients’ needs. Bookings are available for a general wellness consultation, where we discuss your health issues and background to see what role aromatherapy could play as a part of a total health care plan. If emotional wellbeing is a concern, I teach the client how to use essential oils and aroma as a calming and relaxation technique in an‘ Aromatherapy for Stress’ consultation. For a relaxing and therapeutic experience, I offer Aroma-Technique Wellness Massage and Chakra Alignment. In each of these services, essential oils are applied to the skin in a gentle massage. Clients come away feeling re-energised, focused, balanced, relaxed and grounded in mind, body and spirit.
A more fun experience is the Essential Oil for Personality session. I have developed a personality quiz for clients to discover their own fragrance personality. Using the results of the quiz, clients can be assisted to create their own signature fragrance blend of essential oils which best supports their personality.
Consultations are conducted by home visit. Bookings are easily made through the Titch Haven website, where available dates and times can be selected and online payment options are available. https:// www. youtube. com / watch? v = 1g0D2ebAf50 https:// www. facebook. com / titchhaven. au
