If I study English at university – what do I do? You hopefully have an idea of what is like to study English from your experience at school. It can either be:
• English literature, which is the study of authors and their writing, concentrating on authors from different times, countries or specialising in styles of writing( comedy, historical, science fiction, etc.) or
• English language, which is how the English language has developed over a period of time, how writing is structured and how we learn to speak, such as linguistics.
Courses might concentrate on one or be a combination of both but what is certain is that you need to love reading and writing and also enjoy discussions and debate with your fellow students.
Subjects needed: A qualification in English literature and / or language, and it can be useful to have studied a subject like history, religious studies, or a foreign language though this can vary depending on what you are really interested in studying.
What are the Job Opportunities? A degree in English or similar subject can lead to numerous career paths including publishing, journalism, media related jobs, creative writing, script writing, teaching, advertising and PR though due to the skills you pick up in the degree it can really lead anywhere.
