If I study a design course at university – what do I do ? Designing , whether it is creating graphics using images and words , creating a new style of fashion , a new product for the kitchen or a website for a small business , all require creative flair and working with specialist equipment . You need to be able to not only come up with your own ideas but also work to a brief given to you by a client . This combination of mixing creativity with functionality means the end product has to be able to ‘ do ’ something . For example , in graphic design you may need to create an advert to get across a certain message , or in product design , you might be briefed to create a new kind of blender .
Studying this type of course , you will need to be comfortable in using technology and doing hands-on , practical tasks . Often , in the first year you spend time studying the core principles of design / manufacturing and business studies whilst also looking at designers in your field , both historical and modern day , and critically evaluating their work .
