If I study English at university – what do I do ? You hopefully have an idea of what is like to study English from your experience at school . It can either be :
• English literature , which is the study of authors and their writing , concentrating on authors from different times , countries or specialising in styles of writing ( comedy , historical , science fiction , etc .) or
• English language , which is how the English language has developed over a period of time , how writing is structured and how we learn to speak , such as linguistics .
Courses might concentrate on one or be a combination of both but what is certain is that you need to love reading and writing and also enjoy discussions and debate with your fellow students .
Subjects needed : A qualification in English literature and / or language , and it can be useful to have studied a subject like history , religious studies , or a foreign language though this can vary depending on what you are really interested in studying .
What are the Job Opportunities ? A degree in English or similar subject can lead to numerous career paths including publishing , journalism , media related jobs , creative writing , script writing , teaching , advertising and PR though due to the skills you pick up in the degree it can really lead anywhere .
