The Young Chef Who Inspired Others
One day there was a girl named Rose who loved to cook. Rose was a sophomore in high school and she wanted to make a professional career out of it. No one else in Rose’s high school knew she loved to cook or even worked in a restaurant. Rose competed on a local TV show competition where there were three guest judges but she didn’t win the ten thousand dollar prize though she was close. Rose was determined to get into culinary school when she graduated from high school, though she only had twenty thousand dollars that she had saved and the cost to go to culinary school was forty thousand dollars. Rose’s family owned a restaurant and Rose, along side her mother and father, was one of the chefs there. Rose’s most famous dish was grilled salmon with lemons and rosemary for a garnish. Rose and her family lived in Maine, where they were close to the sea. Rose also liked to make lobster rolls, which she seasoned with a special seasoning that no one knew about. The problem was that Rose’s family couldn’t afford their restaurant that they owned and they might have to close it. Rose was determined to not let her family’s restaurant close and she saw in the local newspaper that there was a local radio station that was having a seafood cook-off.
The grand prize was fifty thousand dollars, enough to pay off the cost of the restaurant. Rose asked her father to teach her how to make different seafood recipes than the ones she already knew how to make. Her father taught her how to make a rainbow trout fish filet and steamed clams that would go into a stew. The winner then would be crowned and they would receive a check for fifty thousand dollars. Rose decided to make her famous filleted salmon dish that she knew the judges would love. Rose’s parents were there to watch her and support her.
There was no given time limit to prepare the dish but Rose new that she would make the winning dish. Thirty minutes passed and Rose completed her dish. As she looked over at her other competitors, she realized that no one did any dish similar to hers, which Rose was relieved about. The judge’s scored everyone’s dishes and the highest score, out of 30 points, was 27. All Rose had to do was get a score of 28 or better in order to win. The judges ended up giving Rose a 29. Rose couldn’t believe it, she was only a sophomore in high school and she won against top ranked chefs.
