Breakfast Program

In South Africa it is common for schools to have a feeding scheme of some sort, but at Weiveld they had the need for a breakfast program as well. Since some of the children do not eat at home, and only get food at school, breakfast would have a big impact on their ability to focus in class. But the logistic for breakfast is more difficult than for lunch.

I got in contact with TRRC nutrition that specializes in quality and easy to prepare food for the mining and other industries. We were specifically interested in their “GoAhead Family Cereal “. A grown man can go for a day on only 100g, so it was recommended that 50g would be more than enough for a child. The cost would also be under R1.00/child.

Since the feeding scheme at Weiveld caters for more than 400 children per day, it was not possible for us to provide the finance for this. In 2013 TRRC contacted us and said that they will sponsor 50% of the breakfast program, if LCA could sponsor the other 50%. I contacted the Head master at the school to see how many children will form part of this program. Around 100 children were identified, and we decided to run the program for the 4th semester.

The cereal is mixed with hot or cold water and comes in different flavours. This allows the school to pre-mix the cereal and cut down on time preparing the breakfast.

The project ran for the whole of the 4th semester, and the feedback from the school was very positive. The cost was just under R3000 for the semester. Due to the lack of finance we could not continue with this project.
