there will come a day.....
my conversation with kokumo
Freckelz Marie: Hello, thank you for agreeing to
do this interview with me.
KOKUMO: Hello, No thank you for the opportunity.
FM: Well first of all can you tell me your name,
age and orientation?
KOKUMO: My name is KOKUMO all capital letters,
I am a 24 year old hetereosexual transgendered
woman.
FM: Thanks, How would you describe yourself?
KOKUMO: I am a plus sized, dark skinned, African
American entrepreneur transwoman.
FM: How would you describe your music?
KOKUMO: Definitely Jazz/Folk
FM: Who are your top 5 musical influences?
KOKUMO: Anita Baker, Brandy, Sylvester, Lizz
Wright and The Gossip
FM: Ok, tell me 5 words to describe your cd?
KOKUMO: Hmm, There Will Come A Day…also the
title of the album! (laughs)
FM: Let’s talk a little more about you. Do you think
there was a life turning moment that made you
know you were trans?
KOKUMO: It was self evident, so much so that
I don’t recall a specific age. I remember more
when I decided I won’t let being trans stop me
from being a business woman or stop my singing
career……, that was around 21.
FM: How do you feel being trans in the “Straight”
World? How do you feel being trans in the “LGBT”
World?
KOKUMO: I intentionally remove myself from both
because I work best alone. Due to me identifying
as a heterosexual woman being in the straight
world, doesn’t really affect me and
I love being around other trans women. )4
