The Robbery by The Waterfall

M
e and 7 other coworkers had been stationed at Jayapura to
do our implementation. We loved Jayapura, we loved the
natural green and the fresh air, and we found most of the
natives super-friendly and helpful to us. Plus, there was no traffic and
we could do all sort of adventures on the weekend.
On one fateful Sunday, we all decided to go
to a certain beautiful waterfall at Kampung
Harapan. We were just lounging around, some
of us on the lake, while some just sitting on
the stones around, trying to get a bit of sun,
when a group of three people ambushed
us. They were all dark-skinned and didn’t
wear modern clothing, so we assumed that
they were mountain people. They all brought
parang, a traditional knife, and had masks over
their faces.
They all slashed around with parang while throwing rocks at us.
They ordered us to get into water, and as they took our things, they
continued throwing us to keep up off the land. One of my friends
managed to sneak to behind the robbers, but the situation was quickly
overturned when they realized his presence and started
targeting him with even more rocks, injuring his hand
in the process. We decided that it was best to just
let them have our things, because we were afraid
that they were lacking the inhibitions to not
kill.
In the end, the total loss
amounted to $4000. We
were a bit shaken with
the incident,
and of course reported
to the police.
