Types of Aids Available
There are a huge number of aids that can help eliminate the need
for manual lifting or greatly reduce the risk of injury from these
operations. It would be impossible to list them all, as many have
been designed for specific tasks in specific industries or situations.
If a task carried out regularly requires a mechanical aid, there
should be one available for this specific purpose; for example, a
wheelchair for moving a person from one location to another.
Where a task is carried out rarely, or is a one-off, you must consider
the mechanical aids available to you and use one that is suitable for
the purpose. This should be done as part of the risk assessment
process.
