Let Me Introduce Myself

y name is David Holmes and I want the opportunity to work for you and your business. A journalist, business
writer, corporate communicator, blogger, social media content creator and small business owner I have the
background, technical skills and compassion to help tell the ever changing story of you and your business,
organization or venture.
A media production generalist I have worked in virtually all sectors of the communications industry, including serving
as a community newspaper editor and as a broadcast journalist. I’ve operated a desktop publishing business for
many years where I was primarily involved in producing marketing materials for REALTORS®. I understand the
challenges of operating a business and would enjoy the opportunity to help tell your unique and important story.
West Coast Based Writer / Communicator
A
native of Nanaimo, a mid-sized city located on lovely Vancouver
Island, British Columbia, my family and I very much enjoy the quiet
West Coast lifestyle that such a small community can offer. But
with a media career spanning more than 30 years I’ve had the
opportunity to work elsewhere in the country and to fulfill a number of
different roles over the years. As a journalist, newspaper editor,
interviewer, social media content creator, business writer, blogger, small
business owner, and corporate communicator I believe I can bring that
collective experience to any assignment with passion and caring.
Currently the bulk of my production comes as a contract writer for the
Vancouver Island-based Business Examiner Group of newspapers.
Focusing on the British Columbia business community I’ve written
Nanaimo is a small coastal city
literally hundreds of news stories, feature articles and business profiles
that celebrate the triumphs and challenges of the province’s business sector. Examples of some of those completed
projects (and others) will be showcased elsewhere in this presentation.
Prior to joining the Business Examiner I was the co-founder of the Nanaimo Business News which was a business-
themed website with an emphasis on the Central Vancouver Island region. In this capacity I generated a large
amount of original web content. The experience clearly demonstrated for me the power and immediacy the online
world can provide as an information distribution venue.
I’ve also worked in a contract capacity establishing Social Media websites (including developing content) for three
different retirement communities. I also worked briefly for Real Estate Webmasters (REW)
where I was employed as a content writer / researcher.
I served for a year and a half as the Communications Coordinator for the non-profit
Vancouver Island Real Estate Board (VIREB). I was responsible for all external and
internal communication for VIREB. As the Communi cations Coordinator I worked both
independently and in a team environment when producing materials for other
departments within the Board. I wrote media releases, created advertisements

I also continue to operate a small desktop publishing business that has been
serving the marketing needs of REALTORS® since 1996. I have worked with
many Sales Associates throughout the Central Vancouver Island area,
producing everything from Highlight Sheets and Property Flyers to postcards,
newsletters and all forms of newspaper and magazine advertising.
Before beginning the operation of my desktop publishing business my
professional background has been varied and interesting. Over the years I
have worked as a radio broadcast journalist, produced cable TV programs,
served as a freelance writer and as the editor of various community
newspapers - including the Nanaimo News Bulletin.
