As a motivational speaker, I had stood on stages around the world telling audiences not to let fear stand in the way of opportunity. Now I had to take a dose of my own advice.
So I said yes.
There I was, sitting in a Cessna for the first time, nervous and unsure of what would happen next. As the airplane began rolling down the runway, I said a prayer and closed my eyes. Then the wheels lifted off the ground.
I was airborne. There was no turning back.
Something unexpected happened during that flight. Yes, I was still nervous, but I also began to feel something stronger than fear: confidence. I had done something that scared me, and that changed the way I saw myself.
That is one of the powerful things about facing fear. We do not always have to feel completely ready. We do not have to wait until every bit of nervousness disappears. Sometimes confidence comes after we take action, not before.
