Spacewalk ( Extravehicular Activity ) and Exploration Training
In addition to working inside the space station , astronauts build and maintain the outside of the ISS . For this work , they train in the Neutral Buoyancy Laboratory , a pool that is 40 ft deep and 100 ft by 200 ft . Using modified suits and tools that are very similar to those used in orbit , astronauts practice the skills that prepare them for six-toeight-hour spacewalks . Additionally , they provide input to build the next generation of spacesuits needed for exploring the Lunar surface . For you , spacewalk training is like a very long physical education class that also includes critical thinking and communication .
The astronaut candidate training explained above is just a portion of the two-year course load for astronauts . Upon graduation , they can be assigned to missions , where they will do additional training with their crew members . While challenging , the journey is rewarding and memorable . As you can see , your current coursework builds the foundation for becoming an astronaut . Enjoy your summer vacation , but keep your skills sharp and continue to look for classes that prepare you for your mission !
