However , the Air Force Academy does not let this stop them , and they put on captivating shows that demonstrate their falcons ’ abilities to dive , swoop , turn , and fly at incredible speeds . The USAFA currently has five performing falcons and a few others that aren ’ t quite fit to fly but are perfect for demonstrating just how spectacular these birds are . All the falcons at the school are diligently cared for and receive lots of attention .
The USAFA does not use purebred falcons and instead uses a hybrid of two birds , since that makes it significantly easier for spectators to see the birds ’ incredible tricks and flying patterns .
The most common species they use are Gyr-Saker and Gyr-Peregrine falcons . These falcons have the perfect mix of size , speed , and skill to be great performers .
These shows are a fantastic way to add the academy ’ s spirit to football games and other events .
The falcons perform in public as well , with hundreds or even thousands of people showing up to watch these falcons perform their acrobatic tricks .
