Do you have a younger sister or brother who can build a paper airplane ? Kids aged 9-11 , generally in fourth through sixth grades , can start learning about careers in aerospace . Aerospace careers include engineering , piloting , airplane parts design , and many other jobs .
East Valley School District in Spokane Valley , Washington , offers a fun night at the Historic Flight Foundation for handson aerospace activities . The event happens twice a year , in the fall and spring , and sells out immediately . It is called Flight Knight because their school mascot is the “ Knights .”
Addi Edmonson is a 17-yearold student who helps at the event each year . Her father is Doug Edmonson , a career and technical education director with East Valley School District . Doug ’ s goal is to get kids interested in careers in aerospace in elementary school so that when they get into middle school and high school , they will want to continue learning about these careers . There are many job openings in aerospace , and most businesses are short-handed ( they don ’ t have enough employees ).
Addi has been exposed to careers in aerospace , and now she is seeking a career in the field . She said , “ I have been in engineering at Mt . Spokane High School for three years . I am in aerospace engineering this year as a junior and plan to go to college for aerospace engineering or become a pilot .”
