living talk
The artbook evokes recollections of family and
community, while speaking to Squires’ inner darkness
and the challenges faced as an artist seeking an outer
match, living in a house on the Newfoundland landscape.
Squires’ widow recollects that “there are few places
where you can be free to find and make your own way.
The (Ferryland) lighthouse, and all it symbolized, allowed
that.” For almost 11 years, the artist and his family lived in
the decommissioned lighthouse.
The 240 page hardcover is elegantly designed. Stan
Dragland’s writing is complemented with over 100
colour illustrations, and more than 50 black and white
illustrations. It includes an informative timeline of the
artist’s career achievements.
Gerald Squires: an artbook transports readers to into
a world of so much more than the storied rain, drizzle,
and fog of eastern Canada. Dragland’s book, a beautiful
addition to any library, welcomes readers via prose
inspired by Gerald Squires’ poetry, fiction, letters, and
fine art for much less than the price of a roundtrip plane
ticket.
