living FROM THE EDITOR I W O U L D L I K E to take this opportunity to introduce myself as the new Managing Editor here at Lethbridge living, and to thank Jenn Schmidt-Rempel for being an amazing mentor in the time leading up to this change. I am grateful to have worked with, and learned from, someone who is as passionate about telling the stories behind the people and places of Southern Alberta as I am, and I look forward to sharing more of these stories with our readers. I also look forward to amazing summer activities. I love summer in Southern Alberta. As a kid, I’d wander the river bottom trails with my friends, or we’d explore downtown Lethbridge on lazy afternoons and hang out in Galt Gardens. As a teen, I looked forward to midnight madness at Whoop- Up Days and the rodeos in our neighbouring towns. The outdoor pools were always a must, and sometimes we were there open to close. As an adult I feel the nostalgia of these summer activities along with the heat. Which is why I am excited to present you with our July/August issue. We continue our sesquicentennial celebration with Belinda Crowson’s series that highlights Canada’s milestones through the years, and how these events affected Southern Albertans. This issue we look at famous and royal visitors to Southern Alberta (p. 36). There are so many ways for you to get out into the community, or be active in the summer months – and why not make new friends in the process? Go for a float down the Oldman River (p. 19), or connect with the Lethbridge Sports and Social Club (p. 33), a new organization that seeks to promote social connection through sports activities and other events. How familiar are you with the critters in your backyard? Tyler Stewart introduces us to some of the animals native to Southern Alberta with “Where the Wild Things Are” (p. 27). You can even get involved in a University of Lethbridge student’s backyard wilderness research project! And, of course, if you have youngsters at home with you this season, don’t forget to wear them out at the “Train Park” (p. 42). There is so much to see and do in Southern Alberta, so be sure to visit lethbridgeliving.ca for our events calendar to plan your holiday! Stay safe this summer and thanks for reading. Story idea?
