Economic Resources
The main economic activities are related to agriculture and tourism. Olive oil
production is one of the main sources of income. Furthermore a number of
top quality types of cheese are produced on the island, three of which possess
PDO Status (Protected Designation of Origin), namely ladotyri, feta cheese,
and Kasseri Eressou. Lesbos island is regarded as the homeplace of ouzo due
to the fact that the best quality ouzo is produced on the island.
Quality tourism is also a trademark of the island. Due to absence of typified
mass-tourism, the island concentrates aficionados of archaeology, bird-watch-
ing, new age, and alternative tourism.

Local gastronomy is unique as it is based on high
quality organic ingredients found in abundance,
such as fish, olive oil, cheese and honey.

of the major producing places of olive
oil, and the local culture is closely as-
sociated with the production of olive oil since
the ancient times. Lesbos olive oil is recognised as PDI
(Product of Designated Origin), is lively and aromatic with spe-
cial organoleptic properties, and its golden-yellow colour differ-
entiates it from other types of olive oil.
