-The town dates from 1598 when
Juan de Oñate arrived near the
site. Oñate claimed the region
(including present-day New
Mexico) for the Spanish crown.
The original settlement went by
the name Hacienda de los Tiburcios and later moved to the south side of the Rio Grande. In 1775 the community had a population of 157. The Spanish built their presidio directly across
the river from Ft. Hancock in the Valle de San Elizario and when the presidio
later relocated to the Hacienda de los Tiburcios, the presidio retained the name
-changing the name of the settlement to San Elizario. San Eli (aka) was second
only to El Paso for most of the nineteenth century regarding the county seat.

10, 1916, sixteen Asarco employees were killed
and mutilated by Pancho Villa’s men near the
town of Santa Isabel, Chihuahua. It was one of
the incidents that sparked the Mexican Expedition, this was the United States Army attempt to
either capture or kill Pancho Villa.

This is the oldest operating high school in
El Paso, Texas. The Lady on the Hill, as it is
of Trost & Trost, the Greco-Roman features

The library is the oldest continuously operating
public library system in the great state of Texas.
It started in 1894 as a reading club for male students of teacher Mary I. Stanton. She brought
a collection of between 600 – 800 volumes of
books with her from Georgia to
El Paso. Her reading club became so
popular that Stanton opened it to the public
in 1895. In 1904, the Library board secured a
grant from the Andrew Carnegie Foundation to
build a stand alone library building at the site of
the present main library at Cleveland Square.
Tuesday November 7, 1848 the War Department
General Order No. 58 ordered the establishment
of a military post across from El Paso del Norte.
