Machine Application:
Applying waxes and sealants with a machine polisher is a straightforward and fun process.
Attach a waxing or finishing pad to your polisher. I’m using a Lake Country foam finishing pad ideal for applying waxes and sealants. I like to give new pads a mist of spray detailer/wax to soften them before use.
Apply a good amount your wax or sealant to the pad surface. If you’re using a paste, you can sometimes work the product out of the container and rub it onto the pad. I like to work on one panel at a time before applying more product to my pad.
Carnauba waxes can be a bit difficult to get onto your foam pad. If you can’t work it out of the container like shown below, you can simply scoop some out and spread it on the pad with something like a plastic spoon or even your finger.
Set the machine to a low speed like 1, 2, or 3. If you’re using a cleaner wax or polishing sealant, feel free to raise your speed accordingly.
Before turning the polisher on, gentl dab the product around your work area on the vehicle. Now place the polisher onto the paint surface and turn the machine on. Never start the machine while it’s off the paint. Spread the product around your entire work area in an “up down left right” motion as shown below.
Multiple overlapping passes and applying pressure are not necessary unless you’re using an all in one polishing sealant or cleaner wax. You simply want to layer on an even coat of product onto the entire painted surface.
Apply little to no pressure when moving. Keep your pad flat and centered and work on no more than one or two panels before reapplying product to your pad. Keep the pad on the paint surface when you turn the polisher off. Never lift the polisher from the paint while it’s still on.
Reapply more product to your pad between panels and regularly check the pad for any dirt or debris. Clean or replace the pad if necessary.
If the instructions for your product say to let it dry to a haze, you can apply the product to the entire vehicle (or half the vehicle) before buffing it clean with a microfiber towel. If your product instructions don’t require it to dry to a haze, feel free to buff the product clean between panels. Wipe down panels in straight lines and avoid circular motions. You can mist your buffing towel with a spray detailer/wax to assist in removing stubborn dried up product.
Carefully remove your masking tape and inspect your work to make sure you haven’t left behind any product residue. Multiple coats can be applied. Try to keep the coats thin and evenly spread. A little bit of product goes a long way.
Remember to maintain this coating through the year, wash with a mild car wash shampoo using the wash guide, and use a spray detailer/wax between washes to enhance the protection and shine.
