A SUMMER’S day, 1914. The
headmaster at Uppingham
stands before his gathered
pupils at the end of the
school year.
“Be a man,” he tells them,
“useful to your country;
whoever cannot be that is
better dead.”
In the audience that speech
day was an Oxford University
undergraduate named Vera
Brittain, whose younger
brother was at Uppingham.
As was the lad who would
become her fiancé. Both
enlisted to fight in the First
World War. Both died, along
with one in five of their
classmates.
Their stories were told in
Brittain’s anguished memoir
of life as a nurse in the war,
Testament of Youth, which
was adapted into a TV series
by the BBC in the late 1970s
and released as a major British film on Friday, starring
Alicia Vikander, Dominic
