28 COVER STORY JUSTICE INDIRA BANERJEE Chief Justice, Madras High Court J ustice Indira Banerjee assumed charge as the Chief Justice of Madras High Court on 5 April, 2017. On 8 August, 2016, she assumed charge as the seniormost Judge of the Delhi High Court and was the Executive Chairman of the Delhi State Legal Services Authority. She was Chairperson of the Calcutta High Court Legal Services Committee for several years and officiated as the Executive Chairperson of the West Bengal Legal Services Authority from 9 October, 2015 till her transfer as a Judge of the Delhi High Court. In July 2013, she was nominated to undergo training in Judicial Administration at the Civil Services College, Singapore. Justice Banerjee had been a Member of the Committee of Good Governance of the West Bengal Judicial Academy for almost a decade. She was also the Treasurer of the Calcutta Chapter of the Indian Law Institute. She is a Member of the General Council and the Executive Council of the National University of Juridicial Sciences, Kolkata. She enrolled as an Advocate on 5 July, 1985 and had an extensive practice both in the Original Side and Appellate Sides of Calcutta High Court in all branches of law, except Criminal Law. After 16½ years of practice, she was appointed Permanent Judge of Calcutta High Court on 5 February, 2002. She is a Resource Person of the National Judicial Academy, Bhopal and other Judicial Academies. Justice Banerjee was born on 24 September, 1957, in Calcutta. She studied at Loreto House, Calcutta, after which, she graduated from Presidency College, Calcutta, with an Honours in History. She studied Law at Calcutta University College of Law.
