L
ena Pope recently received a grant enabling
Chapel Hill Academy to achieve circulating
library status. The Ryan Foundation’s grant
allowed CHA to purchase approximately 2,500 books.
That means the school’s library now meets the minimum
number of books required to allow students to check
books out to read at home.
“For so many years, I’ve heard our students wonder why
they could not borrow books from their school library
to take home,” said Vicki Sendejo, CHA principal. “I am
ecstatic our students have been granted that privilege
through the generosity of our friends.”
Research shows that it is critical for students to be
reading on grade-level by the 3rd grade. Unfortunately,
61 percent of children from low-income families do not
have enough reading material at home to practice and
reach grade-level reading.
Chapel Hill Academy’s library is inviting to encourage reading.
Other donors helping to achieve circulating library status
include: Mamie and Morris Korman, The Container
Store, Angela Stanford Foundation, American Legion
Auxiliary, Balcom Agency, the Cleaves and Mae Rhea
Foundation, Colonial Charities, the M.R. and Evelyn
Hudson Foundation, Prim & Proper, Speedway
Children’s Charities, and many generous individuals.
