Defining Success, one kid at a time.
Success
“Success is feeling happy
The feeling of something being accomplished
That thing you want to get done.
“I’m a success today because I had a friend who believed in
me and I didn’t have the heart to let him down.”

Dear Friends,
Todd A. Landry, Executive Director
One of the three critical components of Lena Pope’s mission statement is Success. We recognize
that hope and happiness are essential but so is success – for the children and families we serve
and for our community who supports us. In this issue of Legacy, I hope you will take a moment
to review our 2012-2013 Annual Report, which includes the outcomes achieved in the past year.
We are proud of these results and will continue to work to improve not only because that is what
Success is feeling relieved,
The bricks rising off your shoulders.
Success is the closing of a past door
And the opening of a new door,
Open to choose your own way.
Success is the start of a new day,

and families served by Lena Pope.
How are these results achieved? Through hard work, utilizing research-tested and evidence-based

the belief in children and families that they can succeed. Just as Abraham Lincoln had a friend
that believed in him, we provide a similar belief for children and families which, in turn, leads to
their success and ultimately, success for our entire community.

“I started volunteering 3 years ago at Chapel Hill to find a way to make
a difference in the community. I’ve worked with two to three boys a
week during the last few years, and really appreciate the commitment
of everyone — from the principal to the parents. I’ve done volunteering
elsewhere, and would definitely say the Chapel Hill folks are very
engaged compared to the norm!”
