Welcome New Members By Olisa Adger and Erica V. Knowles-Nelson On December 6, 2015, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, Pi Delta Omega Chapter, welcomed eight new members into the sorority. The Eight Elements of Elegance were celebrated at an equally elegant luncheon at the Hyatt Regency Coral Gables. The new sorority members gave a presentation on their community service project, “It’s in the Bag!”, a workshop for seniors at COPE South, a high school for young mothers and soon-to-be mothers. The interactive workshop included helpful tips on graduation and beyond, and was concluded by presenting the young women with donated handbags filled with toiletries. South Atlantic, Cluster 1 Coordinator, Dr. Sylvia Sloane Jones, provided the keynote address. On December 13, 2015, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated (AKA), Gamma Zeta Omega Chapter (GZO) welcomed K.A.I.R.O.S. 35 into their sorority at a beautiful luncheon at the Bonaventure Resort and Spa in Weston. During the luncheon, the ladies presented a gift of $1,000 for A.S.C.E.N.D. college scholarships. In addition, everyone was truly honored to have the presence of several distinguished members of AKA: International Vice President, Dr. Glenda Baskin Glover; South Atlantic Region, Cluster 1 Coordinator, Dr. Sylvia Sloane Jones; past International Treasurer, Delores Y. McKinley; and past South Atlantic Regional Director and past GZO President, Congresswoman Frederica S. Wilson. Prior to joining AKA the new members participated in a Community Service Project with GZO, Beautifying Bennett Lifter Park. BB15 Top Female Business Leaders Honored at the 2015 Women of Color Achievement Awards 100 Black Men of South Florida, Inc. (100BMSF), in partnership with the Women Presidents’ Organization (WPO), gathered to honor 24 of South Florida’s most outstanding women leading successful businesses and nonprofits for the 2015 Women of Color Achievement Awards. The invitation-only night began with a cocktail reception and live jazz music performed by Jon Saxx. Miami-Dade Chamber of Commerce President, G. Eric Knowles served as the Master of Ceremony for this distinguished night of honor. He welcomed all of the award recipients who either led businesses that reached annual revenues of at least $2 million for product-based businesses, or $1 million for service-based businesses.
