Summer celebrations and changing seasons are all part
W
of Leek Life
e may have reached that point in the year when the children are heading back to school and the nights are starting to draw in, but I don’t think we can really complain about the hand we have been dealt by good old mother nature this summer. It looked unlikely that we could top the super summer of sport we had last year with the Olympic celebrations reaching fever pitch, particular with our own local golden girl Anna Watkins rowing to victory, but with Andy Murray winning Wimbledon, England retaining the Ashes and the British Lions roaring to glory against Australia the nations sporting achievements have most definitely been on a par. This feel good factor has resonated more locally too, and in our summer events picture special we take a look at the wonderful time had by visitors to a number of local annual shows and carnivals. These events are only made possible year on year thanks to the hard working and dedicated volunteers who put them on and I for one think they deserve a huge vote of thanks for doing so. It is these events which bring the community together and help celebrate all that is great and good about living in a rural town like Leek. Looking at other successes being celebrated in this issue, Leek Life caught up with father of four Mark Hirst who recently set up a skating club for youngsters in Leek, we take a look at the exciting music scene taking off in the town with its first Americana and Blues Festival set to take place in October, and bring you all the latest on Leek’s very first Food and Drink Festival which is to take place in early March next year - exciting times ahead indeed. On top of all that we also have all of our regular features and contributors in this jam packed issue of Leek Life. So from me and the team here at Leek Life, enjoy the remainder of the summer, embrace the fast approaching autumnal season and all the delights it brings with it and please remember to let us know if you have an event, group, club or organisation you would like to see featured in a future edition.
